Alves made his Bahia professional debut in a 3-0 victory over Paraná Clube during a match for the 2001 Campeonato Brasileiro Série A. Alves then left to represent Sevilla at the 2003 FIFA World Youth Championship, where he finished as the third-best player overall. Alves left Sevilla and joined Barcelona on July 2, 2008. He joined Juventus on June 27, 2016, and on August 20, 2016, he made his Serie A debut in a 2-1 home victory over Fiorentina. Then, on July 12, 2017, he signed with Paris Saint-Germain, where he made his professional debut on July 29.
